How much is a WOF?

Garages set their own prices. At the AA a standard WOF is $81 for members and $91 for everyone else (checked October 2026). A recheck after a fail is often free if you come back within 28 days.

How often do I need a WOF?

From 1 November 2026: a new car's first WOF lasts until it's 4, cars first registered from 1 November 2019 go every 2 years until they're 14, and cars over 14 go every year. Six-monthly WOFs end. Cars first registered between November 2013 and October 2019 move to every 2 years from 1 November 2027. Your current WOF still runs to its expiry date; the new gap starts at your next one.

Do I need to book a WOF?

Not at most VTNZ, VINZ and AA testing stations: you can drive in. AA Auto Centres and most garages ask you to book. Call ahead either way, so you know the wait.

What happens if my WOF has run out?

You can be fined. From 1 November 2026 the fine for a WOF more than two months out of date goes up from $200 to $350. You can still drive to a booked inspection, or to a garage to fix what it failed on.

What's checked in a WOF?

Tyres, brakes, lights, steering and suspension, seatbelts, glass and wipers, rust and structure, exhaust and fuel leaks, and that the car matches its registration. Under the new rules inspectors also check warning lights for driver-assist features like automatic emergency braking.

Rules from NZTA and the AA. Check NZTA for your own vehicle.
