A short tunnel and a vertical lift carry you from the river up Durie Hill. At the top a memorial tower gives views of Whanganui, the river and, on a clear day, Taranaki and Ruapehu. It is one of New Zealand's few funicular-style lifts and a quirky, cheap stop.
