Lake Ngatu is a dune lake in a recreation reserve 16 km north of Kaitaia, used by locals and day visitors for water sports and picnics. An easy track runs around the lake edge and suits families. It is a quiet detour off SH1 on the way north.

- Turn off SH1 onto West Coast Rd, the access point is 1.9 km along on the left
