The track starts about 200 m from the Aniwaniwa visitor centre and climbs 300 m through red and silver beech with rimu overhead. At the top is the Lake Waikareiti day shelter, and you may hear kaka and kakariki on the way. Tramping tracks continue beyond to Sandy Bay Hut.
