Hot mineral springs are piped into pools set among nikau palms and native bush, with quieter pools a short walk up the hill (including a cold plunge). It's a gentle, bushy contrast to the glossy Rotorua resorts, on the road between Gisborne and Hawke's Bay. Opening days are limited, so check before you commit the detour.
