The Wharekopae River runs down a smooth, angled slab of rock, 60 m long, and locals ride it on boogie boards or inner tubes into a pool at the bottom. It's free and informal, a very Gisborne thing. It's also properly risky, so treat it with respect.

Good to know

  • Bring a boogie board or foam pad
  • Only slide if you can swim, drowning and injuries have happened
  • Rocks can be sharp and slippery
  • Water quality often fails guidelines, check LAWA first
