Waimangu is the youngest geothermal system in the world, created when Mount Tarawera erupted in 1886. A downhill walk passes steaming lakes, craters and hot streams, and you can finish with a boat ride on Lake Rotomahana. It has more bush and fewer crowds than the big thermal parks.
