A level track from Hardings Road follows the upper lagoon past Budges and Moerepo Islands to the wreck of the Waverley, which a flood carried up the channel. Birdwatching is the draw, and the lagoons also hold plants that cope with the tidal swing. There is evidence of early Māori camps on the boulder bank.
