Above Coniston the fell is scarred by copper mines that were worked for centuries, and the remains of mine buildings and spoil heaps line the path from the village. The walk up Church Beck to Low Water tarn is a rewarding half-day even if you do not carry on to the summit. Stay on the main paths because the old workings are unstable.
