Hardwick Hall was built in 1590-97 for Bess of Hardwick and is one of the great Elizabethan houses, designed by Robert Smythson. It looks different from anywhere else of its age: tall and light, with huge windows. The ruins of the older hall sit right beside it, and the estate has walks and a cafe.
