The Bay of Islands is a compact area, so this route is more about stopping than driving. Start with the Treaty Grounds, drive inland to Kerikeri's historic mission buildings and waterfalls, then catch the Opua car ferry across to Russell. The roads are sealed but narrow and winding. Best for a relaxed two or three days with beach time between the history.
