How do I work out the fuel cost of a journey?
Divide the miles by your car's mpg to get the gallons, multiply by 4.546 for litres, then by the price a litre. 150 miles at 45 mpg takes 3.3 gallons, or 15.2 litres.
How much does it cost to drive 100 miles?
At today's average petrol price in the UK (174.4p a litre): £26.43 in a car that gets 30 mpg, £17.62 in a car that gets 45 mpg, £13.21 in a car that gets 60 mpg.
Is diesel cheaper to run than petrol?
Diesel costs 199.7p a litre today against 174.4p a litre for petrol, so a diesel has to use less fuel to cost less: about 15% less.
