Questions

Which vehicles need a COF?

Heavy vehicles over 3,500 kg, and vehicles used to carry passengers for hire or reward (taxis, shuttles, buses), need a certificate of fitness instead of a WOF. A COF A covers heavy and passenger-service vehicles; a COF B is the checkout for imported and modified heavy vehicles.

How often is a COF due?

Every 6 months for most heavy vehicles. NZTA sets the period, and your inspector writes the date on the label.

Can any garage do a COF?

No. Only sites NZTA has appointed for heavy vehicles can, usually VTNZ, VINZ and specialist truck testing stations. Call ahead: not every site certifies every vehicle type.

Rules from NZTA and the AA. Check NZTA for your own vehicle.
