A small stone bridge over Barrow Beck on the single-track lane up to Watendlath. It is one of the most photographed spots in the Lakes because the bridge, the lake far below and Skiddaw all fit in one frame. There are only a few spaces beside it, so most people pull in, shoot and move on.
Good to know
- Go early or late, the lay-by fills fast and the lane has few passing places
- Big vehicles and trailers are a bad idea on this lane
- Surprise View is a short drive further down towards Keswick
- Best time
- Early morning for still water and no queue
- Open
- All year
- Getting there
- Narrow single-track lane from the Borrowdale road with a handful of lay-by spaces
- Vehicles
- Fine in any car
